Art is something that is made by using ones imagination. It is a way to express someones ideas/emotions. I believe art is any way someone demonstrates/creates an idea or expression. Art can come in many different shapes and sizes and can be expressed in many different ways. It can be extremely unique or simple; it can be anything you want it to be.

Early in the year, I believed art was just a creation of something unique and did not think much of it. As the days went by, I realized my mistake. Art is not only something unique, but it is something that has value, meaning, and emotion. An art piece does not only have to be a painting nor sketch, but anything that is created, given value, and meaning. It can also be an expression of skill and, especially, emotion. It can tell someone how the artist was feeling when they were creating the work and can express a message that the creator wants to express. Art can also be expressed in many different medias, such as, photography, video gaming, photoshop, and many more. Art is also a language, one that I cannot read clearly. A drawing, sometimes, can describe the emotions or ordeals people were going through during a specific time period. I have very talented friends that express themselves in their drawings/sketches and sometimes it can show the emotions they were feeling; a hidden truth. With the realization of the true meaning of art, i was then able to connect it with my major.

With a major of Geology, I did not think art would play a major role in my life, however I was wrong. Geology is the study of the Earth’s physical structure and how it is formed. As I logged on to my first meeting of Art 110 zoom class meeting, I, in a way, “shut-down” because I believed it had nothing to do with my major. It took me almost to the first essay that I realized the need for art in my major. I have found use for it when having to draw stratigraphic units, slopes, beach fronts, and sketching materials used to prevent geologic hazards. When drawing a stratigraphic unit, there are many different elements to be drawn such as, the style of rock, disconformity, and features. These rock units help show what has occurred in the past, at that location, and the specific drawing can help clarify the data. When drawing slopes of a mountain range or of a beach, certain features can indicate what type of beach it is or what is causing the waves to crash in a specific way. When sketching materials used to prevent geologic hazards, proportions and detail matter. If one measurement or detail is off, the entire project is wasted/resized and it eliminates time. My appreciation for art has grown in this short time and I will forever be grateful for it and it’s different medias while pursuing my major.

After taking Art 110, I have come to a conclusion that art matters and is needed to complete almost anything in life. If art, artists, and the artistic impulse vanished from this Earth, nothing would have value or meaning. Nothing would express how people were feeling, life would be dull and nothing would really matter. Art is not only important but gives people pleasure/joy. When finalizing an important project for school/work, it leaves you with a sense of accomplishment. Other pleasures can be sketching/painting in ones free time or taking photos of someone they care about. As life goes on, I will look back at the professor and the great class mates I have had and appreciate what they have given me, an understanding of how art is very important in everyday life.
